Program Description
The Dual degree program, Bachelor of Commerce Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a four-year program (192 UOC) for intending secondary school teachers. The program is a nationally accredited pre-service qualification.
Students combine studies in two single secondary teaching specialisations from the BCom. The program covers both theoretical and practical aspects of education, including 80 days supervised professional experience in at least two different secondary schools.

Professional Experience
EDST2002, EDST6760 and EDST6761 provide students with a total of 80 days of professional experience in secondary schools and other educational settings.

Business-related studies, with a Major or Minor stream in business law (Australian/ English) , economics, human resource management , industrial relations, marketing, finance, accounting , or business management. In addition, students must complete: (a) 6 UOC in Accounting or Finance, AND (b) 6 UOC in Business Management (the courses in Accounting, Finance and Business Management may be first year courses).

English Proficiency
Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. It is expected that all applicants will have a Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English, English as a Second Language or Advanced English, or an overall IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in Speaking and Listening and a minimum of 7.0 in Reading and Writing, or the equivalent.
Award with Distinction
High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 across their program and who have completed at least 48 UOC of their program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".
Honours
High achieving BEd (Secondary) students may apply for entry to Honours. Honours is an additional year of study (two years part-time) which allows a student to further explore the field of Education. It involves seminars and the completion of a thesis. Those students who are considering Honours should submit an expression of interest at the beginning of Level 4 and complete a formal application at the end of Level 4. Both should be submitted to the School of Education Honours Convenor. Entry to Honours requires a WAM of 70 or higher in the program and is subject to resources and the approval of the Head of School Education. Honours is awarded in three classes (Class 1, Class 2 in two Divisions, and Class 3). If requirements for these classes are not met the Pass degree will be awarded if the student is not already a Graduate of the program.
Eligible students may commence the relevant Honours program only when they have completed the requirements for the equivalent of a Single degree for that program (i.e. where an Education student in a Dual program would like to commence Honours they must have completed at least the 96 UOC Education core degree plus 48 UOC for the Commerce degree such that a total of 144 UOC has been completed).
Academic Rules
To qualify for the award of the degree at Pass level, a student must:
- enrol in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in Dual mode and complete 96 UOC;
- complete the method requirements for one or two areas of teaching specialisation
- complete at least 30 UOC of Level 1 courses before enrolling in Level 2 courses
- complete at least 30 UOC of Level 2 courses before enrolling in Level 3 courses
Honours
To qualify for the award of the degree with Honours, a Dual award student must:
- be a Graduand or Graduate of the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
- hold a WAM of 70 or higher in those streams they are seeking to further study
- complete the List A and List B seminar coursework requirement for their area of study (18 UOC)
- complete a research project or thesis (30 UOC)

Major requirements 48 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the Australian School of Business, containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core.)
Students in the Dual degree program are required to complete a major in Business Economics, Financial Economics or Business Strategy and Economic Management to meet the requirements for teaching Economics as a secondary teaching area.

Honours
High achieving students may apply to undertake honours in the area of their business major. Honours is an additional year of full-time study (48 UOC) which provides students with advanced knowledge of their chosen field and develops research and communication skills. Students usually complete advanced courses/seminars and a thesis. Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the relevant Honours plan record for entry requirements
