The Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts (BCom/BA) degree provides students with a highly regarded business degree which is complemented by a second degree in the humanities disciplines, including languages, sociology, politics and international relations.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The objective of the BCom is to develop students’:
  • Understanding of institutional structures and processes supporting global commerce
  • Disciplinary skills and perspectives relevant to global commerce
  • Professional competences and ethical perspectives relevant to practice in global contexts
  • Understandings of alternative ways in which knowledge can be created and effectively deployed
  • Capacities for life-long learning and the negotiation of change
  • Understanding of the Australian School of Business graduate attributes, and the importance of: social perspective, professional skills, problem solving, oral and written communication, leadership and teamwork
The objective of the BA is to:
  • Create a pathway for students to gain a wealth of knowledge in the humanities and social sciences
  • Stimulate students intellectually
  • Immerse students in worlds of learning
  • Develop graduates with strong written and oral communications skills
  • Develop students’ capacity to research, criticise and reflect

The Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts needs to be made up of:
  • Compulsory core courses
  • Two courses in Level 1 Arts and Social Science
  • Major requirements
  • Free options
Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses)
Note: For students intending to complete a major in Actuarial Studies, MATH1151 and MATH1251 should be completed instead of ECON1203 . Please refer to Actuarial Studies outline for further information.

Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose four courses from the following list:
Note: For students intending to complete a major in Actuarial Studies, ACTL1001 Actuarial Studies and Commerce must be completed as one of these flexible core courses. Please refer to Actuarial Studies outline for further information.

2 courses in Level 1 Arts and Social Science accounts for 12 UOC. Choose any 2 courses of Level 1 from the Arts and Social Science offerings.

Major requirements account for up to 198 UOC (33 courses)
Choose from either
A single major within the Australian School of Business consisting of 48 UOC, which includes 42 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream and 6 UOC from the core requirements plus a minor of 24 UOC containing at least 6 UOC at level 3 (excluding Industrial Training components). The minor does not form part of the nominated major. Students are unable to take a modern language as a major stream.
or
A double major within the Australian School of Business consisting of 96 UOC (For each major, 42 UOC in the approved disciplinary stream and 6 UOC from the core requirements). Students are unable to take a modern language as a major stream.

The remaining Business course or credit requirements not required for a major sequence and not core courses, as prescribed, if any, may be chosen from any other courses offered by the Australian School of Business.
AND either
A single major within the Faculty of Arts and Social Science consisting of 54 UOC, which includes 12 UOC at level 1, at least 18 UOC at level 2 and at least 18 UOC at level 3 plus a minor of 36 UOC including 6 UOC at Level 1, at least 12 UOC at Level 2 and at least 12 UOC at Level 3
or
A double major within the Faculty of Arts and Social Science consisting of 108 UOC (For each major, 54 UOC in the approved disciplinary stream)

Rules Relating to the Bachelor of Commerce Component
Please refer to the Program Structure for the academic requirements relating to this program.
Rules relating to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce or to the award of the Bachelor of Economics shall apply wherever relevant.
Students are advised to consult the Academic Rules for further information.

Rules Relating to the Bachelor of Arts Component
1. Of the 108 UOC in Arts and Social Sciences required for the combined degree:
(a) none may be from courses offered by the Australian School of Business.
(b) at least 24 and no more than 36 UOC must be obtained in Level 1 courses, including no more than 12 Level 1 UOC offered in any one sequence of study; and
(c) no more than 54 UOC in total may be in any one sequence of study.
