Program Description

This innovative program extends the current Civil Engineering bachelor degree by the inclusion of a stream of courses in Architecture from the Faculty of the Built Environment. Civil Engineers essentially engineer and manage the infrastructure of our built environment including buildings, bridges, roads and highways, tunnels, airfields, dams, ports and harbours, railways, new mines, water supply and sewerage schemes, irrigation systems and flood mitigation works.

The Civil Engineering with Architecture program provides for an appreciation of architectural principles and an
understanding of both the architect's role in construction and the interaction between architects and engineers. The ultimate aim is to help students become conceptual thinkers, inspired by beautiful creations to build even better ones, to develop an appreciation for beauty with the mathematical ability to challenge the traditional boundaries of structural design. Students graduating from this degree will be well qualified to collaborate with architects and other professionals in the built environment to produce integrated and sustainable design. Creativity and inventiveness are the key attributes of this program.

In the final year of the program students may elect to major in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport engineering, water engineering or engineering construction and management.

This program can be taken on a four-year full-time basis, on a part-time basis or on a combined full-time part-time basis subject to the approval of the Head of School. Intending part-time students are advised that all courses are offered only in the daytime.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

Program Structure

The program structure below gives one sequence of courses that fulfils the requirements of the degree. The core of the Civil Engineering degree is maintained and supplemented with courses from the Faculty of the Built Environment. This program complies with the flexible first year structure of all engineering degrees introduced in 2006.

The timing of the elective courses may be modified to optimise the student's choice of courses. While some courses are given twice a year, many courses are given only once a year. In addition, courses may have prerequisites and exclusions. Thus students should plan their enrolments appropriately. Suggestions for other course sequences
consistent with timetabling and availability can be found on the School website at http://www.civeng.unsw.edu.au.

Year 1 (commencing in 2007)
Choose ONE of:
And ONE of:
And ONE of:
Plus the following courses:
Plus choose 2 electives from the Year 1 Elective List http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/rules/elective.htm

BENV2320 Architectural Communications can replace one of these electives.

Suggested Year 1 electives for this program are:
  1. MINE1300 and MMAN1300 are acceptable alternatives for CVEN1300
  2. Not all courses are offered in both sessions but students should complete 24 UOC in each session.

Year 2

Year 3

Year 4
Students achieving a School weighted average mark exceeding 63 (calculated from all courses in Years 1 to 3 of the BE program) are eligible to undertake an honours thesis in Year 4 (CVEN4000 in S1 and CVEN4001 in S2). All students undertaking the honours thesis must enrol in CVEN4002 in S1 and CVEN4003 in S2.
Plus choose ONE of:
And ONE of:
  • Plus Professional Elective 1 (CVEN) (6 UOC)
  • Plus Professional Elective 2 (CVEN) (6 UOC)
The Year 4 Professional Electives may be selected from the following courses (each 6 UOC):

Engineering Contruction and Management:

Geotechnical Engineering:

Structural Engineering:

Water Engineering:

Transport Engineering:

Please note that not all of the above final year electives are offered each year. Students should check availability at the School Office.
