Plan Outline

The Mechatronic Engineering plan provides the student with the ability to acquire a hybrid range of skills based on mechanics, electronics and computing. Whilst there is a comprehensive coverage of mechanical engineering and design areas, the plan enables a deeper understanding of the principles supporting the conception, design, construction, maintenance, integration and repair of intelligent machines. Typical examples of these machines are robots, white goods, cameras, automated test equipment and transport vehicles.

Typical fields which may be encompassed by the program include building services, computer controlled plant, manufacturing, robotics and materials handling. An emphasis is placed on the application of engineering science, development and management in these fields.

  • The first program structures listed (Years 1 and 2) are under the new flexible structure for students who commenced in 2006 and onwards.
  • The program structures for students who enrolled prior to 2006 (Years 3 and 4) are listed after Year 2.

Suggested Year 1 electives for this program are:
  1. COMP1911 is recommended for this MTRN Plan.
  2. MINE1300 and CVEN1300 are acceptable alternatives for MMAN1300
  3. Not all courses are offered in both sessions but students should complete 24 UOC in each session.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE FOR STUDENTS WHO ENROLLED PRIOR TO 2006 IS AS FOLLOWS:-

Year 3
  • General Education Electives 9 (UOC)

Year 4
  • Plus three Technical Elective courses (18 UOC)

Mechatronic Engineering Technical Electives

Eighteen units of credit of Technical Elective courses are required. It is recommended that they be primarily chosen from the Preferred Electives List given below. Included must be at least one of COMP3111, COMP3331 or ELEC3041. However they may, with approval, be selected from the postgraduate list of courses of the School as listed in the Postgraduate Handbook or from Years 3 and 4 courses from other undergraduate plans run by the School. Pre- and corequisite requirements must be satisfied.
Approval is required for the selection of any course from outside the School.
Due to staff availability and to demand, it is likely that not all of the Technical Electives listed will be always on offer. Students are advised in November which Technical Electives will be offered in the following year.
