Program Description

The Master of Architecture degree provides professional education in the practice and theory of architecture. It requires full time attendance for two years. It is designed to deliver an architectural education appropriate to comtemporary multidisiplinary professional practice.

Admission Requirements
Admission is available to students with a first degree from a nationally accredited undergraduate program (or equivalent) in Architecture, together with evidence of a capacity to consistently achieve grades at credit level or higher.

1. UNSW Bachelor of Architectural Studies graduates who achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 and who are assumed to have architectural practice experience may apply directly to the UNSW Admissions Office. Eligible graduates of the UNSW Bachelor of Architectural Studies are guaranteed admission to the UNSW Master of Architecture.
2. Graduates from undergraduate Architecture degrees undertaken in university schools and programs of the Association of Architecture Schools of Australasia (Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea) who achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 (or equivalent) and who are assumed to have completed architectural practice experience may apply directly to the UNSW Admissions Office.
3. Graduates of undergraduate Architecture degree programs from other universities and institutions who achieved a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 (or equivalent) may apply directly to the UNSW Admissions Office.
Applicants under this category are required to provide:
• A statement of intent (maximum 1000 words) outlining why the student wishes to study at UNSW Built Environment Architecture.
• An official academic transcript of previous studies
• Demonstration of 6 months work experience in the office of an Architectural Practice.
• Resume/CV
• Hard copy A3 portfolio (maximum of 10 pages) of university architectural studies projects from a range of academic courses, particularly design studio courses, undertaken in the bachelor degree program. Please note digital portfolios are not accepted.
4. Interested graduates from allied Built Environment design orientated undergraduate degrees such as Architectural Computing, Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture who meet the Master of Architecture academic entry requirement of 65 WAM (or equivalent) are encouraged to contact the BE Student Centre for advice.

Applicants looking to commence studies in architecture should apply for the Bachelor of Architectural Studies (3261) program.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Program provides students with advanced knowledge and techniques in architectural design and related technical and academic knowledge. It prepares students to work in architecture and other design-based industries, and to operate at a professional level in the practice of Architecture. It also allows students to tailor their studies towards specific interests through the large range of elective offerings they may take within the FBE.

Academic Rules

1. The degree of Master of Architecture is awarded after the successful completion of a minimum of 96 units of credit.

2. To fulfil these requirements, students must complete:
• 60 units of core courses, being all those prescribed in the in the faculty regulations for this program.
• 30 units of FBE electives.
• 6 units of open electives.

3. The standard duration of the program is 2 years consisting of 4 semesters of full-time study (24 units of credit per semester).

4. Students are not able to enrol in two design studios concurrently.

Progression

Students may enter the program mid-year. At least one Design Studio must be completed before entering Research Studio. Research Studio and Major Design Studio must be taken sequentially and generally within the same year.

Professional Recogintion

The Master of Architecture is accredited by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) and the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) for the purpose of registration, subject to the prescribed professional experience and examination requirements.

Students enrolled in the MArch program are eligible to become Student Members of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
