The Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS) degree is a highly prized qualification which provides students with information systems expertise and business skills. The program is intended to develop conceptual and practical skills. After an introductory first stage, students will learn about business systems analysis and design, data management, enterprise systems, business process management, big data business analytics, business systems infrastructure and security as well as mathematics, management accounting and commercial programming.
Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
BIS graduates from this degree can target careers in areas such as: business systems analysis, information system development, communications networks analysis and development; IS security development; e-business systems development; business intelligence systems construction, business analytics and IS and IT architecture and infrastructure development and maintenance. The program includes courses from many disciplines including: Information Systems, Technology and Management, and other Commerce and Economics courses.
Program Structure
- 24 UOC core business courses (as detailed in program structure below) (NOTE: If MATHS1041 is completed instead of ECON1203, it will be considered a core business course for this purpose)
- 72 UOC specified INFS courses (as detailed in program structure below)
- An additional 12 UOC of INFS electives (Refer Table 1 below)
- 12 UOC General Education courses
- 24 UOC Free electives (courses which may be taken from any Faculty)
- 24 UOC core business courses (as detailed in program structure below) (NOTE: If MATHS1041 is completed instead of ECON1203, it will be considered a core business courses for this purpose)

Honours
Academic Rules
To be awarded a degree at Pass level, the BIS must contain:
1. 144 units of credit (UoC).
2. A minimum of 96UoC of courses in Information Systems and Business.
3. 24UoC of Level 1 Business Core courses. (MATH1041 is considered a Business course for this purpose.)
4. A sequence of 72UoC courses in the discipline of Information Systems, of which 18UoC must be at Level 3.
5. An additional 12UoC of Information systems courses if the program is completed in “single mode.
6. 12UoC of courses from outside the UNSW Business School to fulfil the University’s General Education requirement.
7. Maximum of 60UoC of Level 1 courses, excluding Level 1 courses completed as part of the General Education requirement.
Progression rules
1. A minimum of 24UoC of courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 2 courses.
2. A minimum of 72UoC of courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 3 courses.
Awarding degree
A Pass degree with Distinction may be awarded if a student achieves a minimum of 75 WAM across the program and completes a minimum of 72UoC at UNSW.
