The Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) is a highly valued business qualification that opens the door to a wide variety of careers. By combining rigorous business studies with a liberal studies component, you are able to design a degree which allows you to undertake studies in the areas of accounting, finance, human resource management, marketing, information systems, management, international business, business economics or business law while at the same time following your interests through studies in Arts, Social Sciences, Languages, and/or Science.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the BCom (Liberal Studies), students will have the ability to:
  • demonstrate business knowledge and apply that knowledge in business problems
  • demonstrate and apply knowledge from the arts, social sciences, languages, and/or science
  • demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills in business and social sciences/science
  • present complex issues in coherent written statements and oral presentations
  • demonstrate understanding of disciplinary issues in a local or global context
  • demonstrate understanding of the principles of working collaboratively in teams
  • understand the social and ethical dimensions in their chosen disciplinary areas

The program normally consists of 32 courses or 192 units of credit (UOC) in approved courses to be completed over a period of four academic years.

  • 1 course in critical thinking and analysis
  • 2 courses in professional and contextual skills
  • Free electives

Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses)
Note: For students intending to complete a major in Actuarial Studies, MATH1151 and MATH1251 should be completed instead of ECON1203 . Please refer to Actuarial Studies for further information.

Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose four courses from the following list:
Note: For students intending to complete a major in Actuarial Studies, ACTL1001 Actuarial Studies and Commerce must be completed as one of these flexible core courses. Please refer to Actuarial Studies for further information.

Major requirements: 48UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the Australian School of Business (See Table A), containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core.)

Liberal Studies courses account for a minimum of 36 UOC (6 courses) chosen from two out of the following three streams: Humanities, Language or Science. In order to obtain a third major in Liberal Studies, students should undertake all Liberal Studies courses from one area of approved study and will need to complete whatever the min UOC requirement is for that Major. (This may mean that the student may need to complete more than 192 UOC due to the UOC required for some Liberal Studies Majors). The approved areas of study are listed below (Table B).

Critical Thinking and Analysis accounts for 6 UOC (1 course)
Professional and Contextual Skills accounts for 12 UOC (2 courses) which are selected from the list below

Free electives account for up to 42 UOC (7 courses). The number of free electives may vary depending on your chosen major(s) combination undertaken and whether you wish to declare a third major in this program. Honours

High achieving students may apply to undertake honours in the area of their Commerce major. Honours is an additional year of full-time study which provides students with advanced knowledge of their chosen field and develops research and communication skills. Students usually complete advanced courses/seminars and a thesis. Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the relevant Honours plan record for entry requirements and contact the Honours Co-ordinator in the relevant School.
