The double degree program Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education (UNSW Music/Ed) is a four year program (full time) for intending specialist music teachers. Graduates are qualified to teach classroom and instrumental/vocal music from Grade 7 to 12. The basic requirements of the program are simple. The BMusic BEd has a depth component and a breadth component. The program is only available in Single Mode.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes The BMusBEd offers an integrated training in six areas: Musicology, Musicianship, Music Education Studies, Performance Studies, Education Studies and Contextual Studies.

To qualify for the BMusBEd at Pass level, a student must obtain at least 192 units of credit (UOC) normally taken from the six components listed below.

Prescribed Musicology/Musicianship Electives
Prescribed Electives Prescribed Electives are chosen from the list of course offerings published by the Program.
Free Electives A Free Elective is any course offered either within or outside the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in which the student is able to enrol.
Award with Distinction High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 across their program and who have completed at least 48uoc of their program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".
Honours High achieving students (in Single or Dual Mode) may apply for entry to Honours. Honours is an additional year of study (two years part-time) which allows a student to further explore their depth studies. It involves seminars and the completion or a research project or thesis. Those students who are considering Honours should submit an expression of interest at the beginning of Level 4 and complete a formal application at the end of Level 4. Both should be submitted to the Stream Convenor or the Designated School or Stream Honours Convenor. Entry to Honours requires a WAM of 70 or higher in the stream(s) seeking to be further studied and is subject to resources and the approval of the Head of School in which the stream(s) is/are based. Honours is awarded in three classes (Class 1, Class 2 in two Divisions, and Class 3). If requirements for these classes are not met the Pass degree will be awarded if the student is not already a Graduate of the program.
Performance Ensembles BMusBEd students must take part in at least two of the performance ensembles offered by the School, one of which must be a major performing ensemble.

Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. Prospective teachers must be able to communicate effectively with school students and staff members.
It is expected that all applicants will have a Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English or a Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in English as a Second Language or a Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Advanced English or An overall IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and Listening and a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing or the equivalent. Students may transfer from the combined degree program to the Bachelor of Arts program with a major in Music in the first 2 years. After three years in the combined degree, students may transfer to the Bachelor of Arts and exit the program with a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music and a Minor in Educational Studies. Students who elect this option should follow one of the following exit strategies:
The Academic Rules for the BMusic BEd and the online enrolment facility provide students with a wide range of course choices. The online enrolment facility checks that students meet the enrolment requirements for individual courses but not that a course complies with Program Rules. Students are responsible for ensuring they are enrolling in accordance with the Academic Rules outlined above. Students should not assume that because they have enrolled in a course online that the course is automatically credited to their degree program.
