The Bachelor of Commerce (Services Marketing -Tourism and Hospitality) is a 4 year full time degree which provides core business skills and breadth of knowledge as well as depth in its two specialised majors - services marketing and tourism and hospitality. It also provides an option for students to undertake a third major, which may be from any specialisation within the Australian School of Business, or it may be a language from among those offered by the School of Modern Languages in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. The program prepares graduates for management positions in a wide variety of careers in the rapidly growing service sector which embraces tourism, hotels/resorts, hospitality and marketing.
One of the strengths of the degree is its rigorous grounding in tourism, hospitality management and marketing, which focuses on the service sector and business fundamentals. Other key features are experiential learning; hands-on industry training experience; the high-level internship program with exclusive positions at Qantas, the Intercontinental Hotel Group, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, ATEC (Australian tourism Export Council) and other leading tourism government and private sector organisations; and its development of students' leadership, management and communication skills. The industry employment component in second year hones the students' management skills and provides an opportunity to acquire experience in sectors of the industry in which they are interested. During the first six months of the degree students complete operational training in tourism and hospitality management at a private college opposite the UNSW campus. Students will be eligible to be awarded a nationally accredited Diploma of Hospitality Management and a Diploma of Event Management upon completion of this training and subsequent courses in the degree. Graduates from the program are in demand for management careers in airlines, international hotel chains, marketing consulting, tourism marketing and marketing research, in federal, state and local government agencies. Entry is by academic achievement and written application to the School of Marketing. Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes Students who have completed the program will have a rigorous grounding in tourism and hospitality management, accounting, economics and business statistics; hands-on industry training and employment experience; and have developed leadership, management and communication skills.
