Program Description

This program extends over four years and students study full-time during the day for twenty-eight weeks of each year (excluding examination and recess periods).

The Director of Teaching and Learning, School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering, may approve various program patterns involving full-time or part-time study.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

Program Structure

The program structure below gives one sequence of courses that fulfils the requirements of the degree. The timing of the general education courses and elective courses may be modified to optimize the student's choice of courses. Students will have the option of choosing up to 12 UOC of professional electives available in year 3 and 4 if first year electives are chosen to satisfy core chemical engineering requirements shown in subsequent years. Suggestions for this option and other course sequences consistent with timetabling and availability can be found on the School website at http://www.ceic.unsw.edu.au While some courses are given twice a year, many courses are given only once a year. In addition, courses may have prerequisites and exclusions. Thus students should plan their enrolments appropriately.

PLEASE NOTE:
  • The first program structures listed (Years 1 and 2) are under the new flexible structure for students who commenced in 2006 and onwards.
  • The program structures for students who enrolled prior to 2006 (Years 3 and 4) are listed after Year 2.

Suggested Year 1 electives for this program are:
  1. COMP1911 is an acceptable alternative for ENGG1811
  2. Students can take the combination CHEM1011 and CHEM1021 or the combination CHEM1031 and CHEM1041 as a replacement for the combination MATS1101 and CEIC1001 Note: MATS1101 and CEIC1001 combination may not be the optimum combination for Session 2 starting students - consult School.
  3. Not all courses are offered in both sessions but students should complete 24 UOC in each session.

    Students are expected to possess a calculator having exponential capabilities, however, more advanced calculators and personal computers, will be found useful. In examinations, students may be required to use calculators supplied by the University, so that no student will have an unfair advantage over another. Further information may be obtained from the Head of School.

    Students of both Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry are advised to have a copy of Perry J H Ed. Chemical Engineers Handbook 6th Ed. McGraw-Hill. This book is used extensively for most courses and units. Certain courses and units do not have specified textbooks and in these cases reference books are used or printed notes supplied.

    Professional Recognition

    Successful completion of the BE degree program is accepted by the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and Royal Australian Chemical Institute as sufficient academic qualification for corporate membership.
