Description This course covers the main aspects of applied chemistry in a context especially designed for chemical engineers. The course is divided into three main parts: inorganic chemistry and chemistry of elements, organic chemistry and petro-chemistry, chemistry in solution and colloid chemistry. The production of all main elements ranging from gases to metals is covered as well as their most important compounds. Key organic chemistry reactions will be illustrated to assist understanding the processes taking place in the industrial production of chemicals. We cover important petrochemical reactions starting from the refinery of oil to the production of some main chemicals in industry including the synthesis of polymers. Finally, we will focus particular aspects of chemistry in solution such as compound solvent interaction, the behaviour of particles and polymers in solution.
