Description Heat and mass transfer. In this course, the principles of transport phenomena introduced previously in fluid flow are extended to heat and mass transport. Topics include: Introduction to conductive, convective and radiative mechanisms of heat transfer, Physical origins and rate equations, One-dimensional steady-state heat transfer with heat generation and chemical reactions, Composite walls, contact resistance and extended surfaces, Introduction to heat exchangers; log-mean temperature difference, effectiveness - NTU methods, Introduction to diffusive and convective mechanisms of mass transfer, Physical origins and rate equations, Diffusion coefficients, One-dimensional steady-state mass transfer in common geometries.
Analogies between heat and mass transfer mechanisms are drawn. Analysis of unsteady-state heat and mass transfer via solution of the Navier-Stokes equations are introduced as are graphical methods and extension to multi-dimensional problems.
