Suspension of Naval Architecture undergraduate specialisation

UNSW Engineering intends to suspend intake for the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Naval Architecture in 2017 while it is reviewed for possible closure.

The suspension only relates to new enrolments and does not affect current students. Students already in the program will be able to continue with their Naval Architecture studies, with a view to completing their degree.

UNSW Engineering will contact prospective students affected by the suspension and offer advice on possible options. Current students are welcome to speak with the School regarding this change via the contact options below.

Prospective students who were considering Naval Architecture are also invited to attend the ‘options lunch’ on campus, being held on 17 December. Please email the School for further details and register your attendance.

STREAM OUTLINE

Naval Architecture is the branch of engineering which is concerned with the design, building, and utilisation of all types of ships and marine vehicles.

Naval architects must be conversant with a wide variety of skills, including most forms of engineering and architecture. This is because a ship or a boat must be a completely self-sufficient vehicle containing a number of systems and able to withstand the loads from the sea. Yachts, fishing boats, frigates, ferries, catamarans and pleasure craft are just a few of the types of vessels that are studied during the program.

The Faculty has approved an arrangement whereby students who satisfy the requirements of the first two years of a Mechanical Engineering four year degree program at any Australasian tertiary institution may be admitted to Years 3 and 4 of the program leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree in Naval Architecture. The proviso is that the Head of the School is satisfied that the courses studied at the other institution are equivalent, and that their recommendation is given.
