Plan Summary
The International Studies component in the program Bachelor of International Studies Bachelor of Laws provides the knowledge and skills essential for understanding and working in the rapidly changing global environment.
The Asian Studies plan is an integrated program combining language study, a core program of study in International Studies, and a core program in Asia-related study, together with an approved overseas program to be undertaken during the third and fourth years of study. The basic requirements for the Asian Studies plan are:
1. a total of 138 units of credit. 2. 18 units of credit in INST courses, including 12 units of credit at Level 1 and INST3900. 3. 36 units of credit in ASIA and Asia-related courses, including ASIA1001 and ASIA1002 at Level 1 and 24 units of credit in Asia-related courses at Upper Level. 4. a sequence of 36 units of credit in one of the following approved Asian languages: CHIN Chinese, INDO Indonesian, JAPN Japanese, KORE Korean. 5. 48 units of credit in an approved Overseas Study program over two sessions (INST3101 and INST3102). Compulsory First Year Courses
Second Year Courses
There is a broad range of Asian Studies courses offered in the Faculty. These include those that focus on particular countries in Asia (e.g. Indonesia or Korea) as well as others that cover specific issues in the Asian region (e.g. media, philosophy, politics). While it is important for students to develop a good understanding of their selected country of study, they should also seek to understand the interactions between the Asian countries and the issues affecting the Asian region as a whole.
Country-Specific Courses
Courses with a Broader Regional Focus
(students are required to complete at least one course from this list)
Third Year
Most 3000 series courses have prerequisites (e.g. you must be in your third year of study); some have a prerequisite of units of credit in the discipline. If you are interested in enrolling in a course for which you have not satisfied the prerequisites, contact the lecturer concerned.
To fulfill the degree requirements of the Bachelor of International Studies program, all students must complete one year of overseas study (INST3101 and INST3102).
