Description

An introductory study of Chinese politics with special attention to political issues, values, and the conflicts of interests in policy-making. Includes the development and nature of communism in China, economics and development strategy, education and culture, defence and foreign policy.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should:
  • Be familiar with China's crisis situation in the first half of the 20th Century: domestic turmoil and foreign invasion
  • Grasp the nature of the Chinese revolution: escalating radicalisation of politics
  • Construct the organisational structure of the CCP and the main contents of the Party's ideology
  • Describe the types and functions of China's party/state functionaries
  • Explain the interlocking party/government relations
  • Understand the background and the rationality for reform
  • Understand Greater China as a cultural, economic and political concept
  • Be able to analyse China's post-Cold War foreign policy strategy and its relations with the major powers.

Assessment

  • Participation - 10%
  • Essay (2500 words) - 30%
  • Two class tests - 60%
