Plan Outline

The Asian Studies plan is an integrated program combining language study, a core program of study in International Studies, and a core program in Asia-related study, together with an approved overseas program to be undertaken during the third and fourth years of study.

Plan Structure

The basic requirements for the plan are:
  • a major sequence of 42 units of credit from the core program in International Studies
  • a sequence of 36 units of credit in one of the following Asian languages: CHIN Chinese, INDO Indonesian, JAPN Japanese, KORE Korean
  • at least 36 units of credit in Asia-related courses, including ASIA1001 and ASIA1002 at Level 1
  • 48 units of credit at an approved overseas university over two sessions

Second Year Courses
There is a broad range of Asian Studies courses offered in the Faculty. These include those that focus on particular countries in Asia (e.g. Indonesia or Korea) as well as others that cover specific issues in the Asian region (e.g. media, philosophy, politics). While it is important for students to develop a good understanding of their selected country of study, they should also seek to understand the interactions between the Asian countries and the issues affecting the Asian region as a whole.

Third Year Courses
Most 3000 series courses have prerequisites (e.g. you must be in your third year of study); some have a prerequisite of units of credit in the discipline. If you are interested in enrolling in a course for which you have not satisfied the prerequisites, contact the lecturer concerned.


Overseas Study Program

To fulfill the degree requirements of the Bachelor of International Studies program, all students complete one year of overseas study (INST3101 and INST3102).
