Professional Recognition of Programs

For Postgraduate Students

The degree programs offered by the Australian School of Business are recognised by professional organisations in accordance with the details set out below:

Australian Computer Society (ACS)

The following qualifications in Information Systems have been accredited by Australian Computer Society (ACS) for its provisional membership at the Professional Level.

Master of Commerce (Information Systems and Management) (Prior to 2005)
The basis for accreditation is satisfactory completion of the full requirements for the program plus either
  • Satisfactory completion of eight (8) courses in Information Systems (INFS) as a disciplinary specialization or

  • Satisfactory completion of eight (8) courses in Information Systems (INFS) as articulated advanced specialization.


  • Master of Commerce (Information Systems) (2005 onwards)
    The basis for accreditation is satisfactory completion of the following core courses
    1. COMM5001 Business Communication, Ethics and Practice
    2. COMM5002 Managing for Value Creation 1
    3. COMM5003 Managing for Value Creation 2
    4. COMM5004 Business Project
  • plus two courses in Information Systems as a disciplinary foundation

  • plus four courses in Information Systems as a disciplinary specialisation
  • and completion of the full requirements of the program


  • Conditions of Accreditation
    The course is accredited as a whole course and the accreditation may not extend to when undertaken by students who are granted advanced standing, credit(s) or exemption(s) by the institution. A course undertaken by a student granted advanced standing, credit(s) or exemption(s) will only be regarded as the accredited course where, in the opinion of the Society, credit(s) or exemption(s) are given for equivalent subjects (particularly in terms of Information Technology content) taken at an equivalent educational level in a institution of equivalent academic standing.

    Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI)

    The following qualifications in Human Resource Management have been accredited by the National Accreditation Committee (NAC) of the Australian Human Resources Institute for its membership program.

  • Master of Commerce with specialisation in Human Resource Management


  • Accreditation is granted for a period of three years. Further information on membership and membership benefits can be found on AHRI website www.ahri.com.au

    Australian Market and Social Research Society (AMSRS)

    Postgraduate students majoring in Marketing are able to obtain the Certificate of Market Research if they successfully complete a number of approved courses. The Certificate of Market Research from The Australian Market and Social Research Society (AMSRS) is widely recognised by government and industry as a measure of competence in market research.

    To qualify for the Certificate, Students enrolled in the Master of Commerce program must complete and pass the following courses:

    Students enrolled in the Master of Marketing program must complete and pass the following courses to qualify for the Certificate:

    Students who have successfully completed the required courses must complete the application form which is available from the AMSRS website www.amsrs.com.au

    CPA Australia

    CPA Australia has accepted UNSW as an approved tertiary institution for the purpose of its membership qualifications.

    Graduates who complete the Master of Professional Accounting or the Master of Professional Accounting (Extension) may be eligible for associate membership of CPA Australia. Although the programs are accredited, CPA Australia assesses every applicant for membership requirements, which include a rule that each applicant must hold a degree which is considered comparable by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) to an Australian Bachelor's degree. If requested, CPA Australia will provide an assessment of an overseas qualification.

    Note Completion of Master of Professional Accounting or Master of Professional Accounting (Extn) program is not equivalent to the CPA Program. You may be entitled to receive elective credits towards the CPA Program. Please contact CPA Australia for further information.

    The Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA)

    Graduates from the following financial and accounting postgraduate programs may be eligible for membership with FINSIA: Master of Finance, Master of Financial Analysis, Master of Professional Accounting and Master of Commerce (depending on the specialisation chosen).

    Also, Business graduates can apply for advanced standing if they chose to do FINSIA education programs (eg. Postgraduate/Diploma/Certificate).

    The Institute of Actuaries of Australia

    The UNSW actuarial program is fully accredited by the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and recognised for exemptions by the Institute of Actuaries (London) for the Core Technical subjects. To qualify as an actuary in Australia requires the completion of, or exemption from, subjects in the professional syllabus of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.

    Qualification as an Associate of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (AIAA) is attained on completion of the courses in Parts I and II. Qualification as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) requires the completion of subjects in Parts I, II and III of the professional actuarial examinations.

    Part I and Part II of the professional examinations are covered in the Master of Actuarial Studies program. No exemptions are available from the Part III examinations.
    Part III consists of modules completed by distance education through The Institute of Actuaries of Australia usually on a part-time basis after completing the Part I and Part II subjects.

    Other Professional Recognition
    The Faculty of Actuaries and the Institute of Actuaries in the UK offer exemptions from the equivalent subjects in their syllabus if students have obtained exemption through the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. This covers only Part I subjects. However, Fellows of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia can obtain Fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries (London) if they wish to practice in the UK or Europe.

    Students who have completed an actuarial studies major and obtained exemptions from the Part I subjects of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia can apply for waivers of some of the examinations of the Society of Actuaries (North America). Fellows of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia can apply for admission as an Associate of the Society of Actuaries if they wish to practise in North America.

    Fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) is recognised by local actuarial societies in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Japan. The actuarial societies in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia do not conduct their own examinations. For more information, please go to Institute's website at www.actuaries.asn.au

    The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA)

    Graduates who complete the Master of Professional Accounting or the Master of Professional Accounting (Extension) may be eligible to enter the ‘CA Program’ leading to membership, provided they have completed accredited courses in the core knowledge of Financial Accounting and Reporting, Taxation, Audit and Assurance, and Management Accounting and Analysis

    Graduates are advised to confirm academic entry requirements for the ‘CA Program’ with ICAA (www.charteredaccountants.com.au).
