Actuarial Studies involves the application of quantitative, economics and financial models and analysis to long-term financial management particularly in life insurance, general insurance, health insurance and superannuation, as well as in other financial services.
Actuarial courses at UNSW involve the study of models used to quantify and manage risks and the principles involved in pricing, risk assessment, investment, financial management and financial soundness of insurance companies, benefit plans, financial service companies and financial projects. The courses are quantitative and intellectually demanding. Students require a strong ability and interest in mathematics, statistics and their applications to business. Actuaries are employed by insurance companies, superannuation funds, banks, and governments and also practise as consulting actuaries. Studying Actuarial Studies at UNSW The study of Actuarial Studies at UNSW is primarily through the Actuarial Studies Unit (www.actuarial.unsw.edu.au) which offers a number of undergraduate programs of study (please refer to the table below for a complete list) leading to the Bachelor of Commerce. It is also possible to complete combined degree programs which include Actuarial Studies as a major. An Honours year in Actuarial Studies is available for high achieving students. The School also offers postgraduate programs and Co-operative programs that involve industrial training. The Actuarial Studies Major has been designed so that students who meet the required standards can apply for exemptions from all of the Part I exemptions of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Courses covering the Part II Professional examinations are offered in a 4th year of study in combined degrees, in an Honours year or in a Masters of Actuarial Studies program.
