Description The School of English, Media and Performing Arts offers major sequences in the Bachelor of Arts program as well teaching the core program in the Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications), and Bachelor of Science (Media and Communications). The School is also responsible for the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Dance). Both the BA and the BA (Media and Communications) can be studied in combination with the Bachelor of Laws ( LLB).
Academic staff specialise in diverse approaches to contemporary cinema, media, multimedia, and performance studies. The School offers major sequences of study in all the important fields of modern culture and mediated performance. The School boasts professional-level theatres, dance studios, large rehearsal spaces, a cinema, film production facilities, sound and animation studios, and up-to-date multimedia production laboratories. So a significant component of creative media and performance (drama and dance) production is available in all programs taught in the School. With the School's excellent facilities and staff who are engaged with current developments in the media and performing arts and arts industries, your study at the University of New South Wales will be exciting and challenging. Specialisations (majors) are offered in:
Media, Culture and Technology: provides students with a progressive understanding of the social, cultural and phenomenological impacts of media and communications technologies in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Film: provides students with a sophisticated understanding of the history and contemporary significance of film as a medium and cinema as an institution. The study of film is set in a broader context of screen cultures and audio-visual industries both in Australia and globally. Theatre and Performance Studies: examines at how the theatrical and performing arts reflect and shape our sense of who we are. It studies theatre and performance history and current trends, allowing students to engage deeply with contemporary theatre and performance culture. Other programs offered by the School are:
Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Dance)
Dance Education: a program centred on dance studies, history and aesthetics combined with studies of education aimed at equipping graduates to teach dance in the NSW education system and more generally.
Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications)
Bachelor of Science (Media and Communications) Media and Communications: teaches multimedia production and contextual media studies in an intensive programme which equips students to develop careers in the media and communications industries. Students also complete a major from the wide range offered in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
