Program Description

The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering offer a dual degree program which qualifies students for two degrees after the equivalent of six years of successful full-time study leading to the award of the degrees Bachelor of Advanced Science(Honours) and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).

The Faculty of Science administers the program, and delegates administration of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) requirements to the School which offers the Engineering discipline selected. Students should seek advice from the Faculty of Science regarding their Advanced Science (Honours) program, and the relevant Engineering School Office, or the Faculty of Engineering, regarding their Engineering program.

Program Structure

With this dual degree program, students take the 144 units of credit core of the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program (program 3962) and the 168 units of credit core of the relevant Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program. Because of an overlap of 24 units of credit of Science courses in the core for both degrees, the total units of credit required for completion is 288 UoC, rather than 312 UoC (please see Academic Rules below for more details).

The BAdvSci(Hons) BE (Hons) dual degree is offered in the following Engineering disciplines:

Bachelor of Engineering(Honours)

Award of Class of Honours
  • Class 1: WAM of at least 80 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
  • Class 2 Division 1: WAM of at least 75 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
  • Class 2 Division 2: WAM of at least 65 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
(NOTE: First attempt counts. Honours WAM to be calculated to one decimal place.)

Academic Rules

Requirements for the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) in dual degree mode with Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

When taken in dual degree mode a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) is comprised of 144 units of credit which includes:
  • An approved major from the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program;
  • SCIF1131*;
  • 48 UoC Honours Year;
  • Science elective courses.
*For students completing a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) with a Bachelor of Engineering(Honours), ENGG1000 Introduction to Engineering Design and Innovation will be counted towards meeting this requirement (i.e. 3762 students are not required to enrol in SCIF1131).

Academic rules relating to the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours)

When a student undertakes a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) degree as part of a dual degree, the program rules are as follows:

1. Students must complete a minimum of 144 units of credit.

2. Students must complete at least one approved Advanced Science (Honours) major, and this must be declared before enrolling in Level II courses. Details of approved Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) majors and how to declare a major can be found on the 3962 Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program page.

Students in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours)/Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) are not permitted to declare a Bioinformatics major in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) when taking the Bioinformatics Engineering stream for their Engineering component.

3. Students may choose to complete an optional minor using their Science electives. Details of approved Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) minors and how to declare a minor can be found on the 3962 Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program page. Students cannot complete a minor with the same name as their nominated major, and Level II and III courses cannot be double-counted between majors and minors. More than one minor may be completed subject to the limit on double-counting. Students must declare their minor(s) before their final semester.

4.SCIF1131 Introductory Skills for Science (6 UoC) must be completed in first year.

Students taking program 3762 Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours)/Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) must take ENGG1000 Introduction to Engineering Design and Innovation instead of SCIF1131.


5. An Honours Year of 48 UoC must be completed. Honours may only be completed in one discipline. For information regarding the admission requirements and application process for Honours, please see the information under 'Honours’ on the 3962 Advanced Science (Honours) program page.


6. In addition to the courses required for a student's chosen major, SCIF1131 and Honours, students must take 'Science' courses so that the major plus SCIF1131, plus Honours year plus 'Science' courses total 144 UoC. Details of what courses constitute 'science' courses can be found in Table 1 on the 3962 Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program page.


7. Students must complete at least 24 UoC of Level I ‘Science’ courses.

8. Students must complete at least 30 UoC of Level III ‘Science' courses.

9. When offered in a particular major, students must take higher versions of any Level II or Level III courses. Any variation to this must be approved by the Associate Dean (Academic Programs) or nominee.

10. Students may not enrol into Level II courses until at least 30 UoC of Level I courses have been successfully completed.

11. Students may not enrol into Level III courses until at least 72 UoC of courses have been successfully completed.

12. Progression to stages 2, 3, and 4 of this program is subject to academic performance. Students will be required to attain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 in each semester. If a student does not maintain this minimum level of academic performance, they will be transferred to the 3767 Engineering (Honours) / Bachelor of Science program.

Notes:
  • Students who intend to complete a double major or a major combined with a minor in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) when taken as part of a dual degree should be aware that it may be difficult to complete these combinations within 144 UOC. This may involve extra time and cost to complete, and may have visa implications for international students
  • Students majoring in Advanced Physics, Climate Dynamics, Physical Oceanography, Mathematics or Statistics in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) will need to replace one or two of the first and second year Mathematics courses in their Engineering program with second year Mathematics courses required for the relevant Advanced Science (Honours) major. For further information regarding this, students should read the relevant document Mathematics in BE/BSc/AdvSci(Hons) - Physics Major or Mathematics in BE/BSc/BAdvSci (Hons) - Mathematics or Climate Dynamics Major or see staff in the Science Student Centre or School of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Students undertaking a major in Biological Science, Earth Science, Ecology, Geochemistry, Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Marine and Coastal Science as part of the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours), will be exempted from completing MATH1041 Statistics for Life and Social Sciences and BEES2041 Data Analysis for Life and Earth Sciences where MATH1131 Mathematics 1A, MATH1231 Mathematics 1B, and a relevant second year statistics courses has been completed as part of the Bachelor of Engineering. For further information regarding this, please see the Science Student Centre.
  • Students completing a major in Biological Science, Biotechnology, Genetics, Geochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Pathology need to carefully choose one of their first year Engineering electives to take a course for this major, otherwise, it will require more than 288 units of credit to complete the requirements for the Engineering degree and Advanced Science(Honours) program. This could involve an extra semester of study, extra cost and would have visa implications for international students. Students should seek advice from the Science Student Centre as soon as they start planning their enrolment.
  • Students wishing to complete a Biotechnology, Neuroscience or Vision Science major will not be able to complete their major and the Engineering program within 288 units of credit. Completing one of these majors as part of the dual program will involve an extra semester of study, extra cost and would have visa implications for international students.
  • Students are not permitted to declare a Bioinformatics major in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) when taking the Bioinformatics Engineering stream for their Engineering (Honours) component.
  • COMP courses do not count towards the Advanced Science(Honours) component of this dual degree and will not contribute to the minimum 144 UoC of required ‘Science’ courses described in rule no. 6 above.
  • Where students complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering and the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) in less than 288 units of credit, the remaining elective courses taken to bring the total to 288 units of credit must be taken from the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science.
Requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in concurrent mode

To obtain the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) a student must successfully complete courses making up at least 168 units of credit described in the stream requirements for the BE (Hons) specialisation for which the student is enrolled. Students must also complete 60 days of Industrial Training.

Students may not count more than 60 units of credit of level 1 courses in this 168 units of credit.

Progression

To ensure that all students who complete the program attain the honours level learning outcomes of the program, the progression rules for the program are as follows:
  • No level 4 BE (Hons) course until 102 UoC of BE (Hons) stream passed
  • No level 3 BE (Hons) course until all Introductory core passed
  • If any of the conditions below apply, students will be transferred to the Bachelor of Engineering Science program, with such transfer subject to appeal:
    • 2 fails in any given core course
    • After half or more of the BE (Hons) stream attempted (more than 84UoC), 50% or more of BE (Hons) stream courses have been failed
    • Prior to the final 48 UoC of the stream (120 UoC or more of the BE (Hons) stream completed), a WAM of less than 50%
Substitution

Students may substitute up to 12 UoC of Advanced Disciplinary courses (Level 5) in place of Disciplinary Knowledge courses from a school specified stream list of courses with the approval of the Program or Stream Authority.
