Program Description

The handbook provides you with information on the degree structure you would need to follow for the year you commence your study.

If you are a prospective student researching your study options, please visit UNSW Business School website for more information.

The Bachelor of Economics / Bachelor of Science program enables students to complete a program of study which combines the strengths and flexibility of each single degree. This program will appeal to students wanting to combine two strong, focused and highly regarded professional programs.

The typical duration of this program is 4 years full-time. For admission to the program, students must satisfy the entry requirements to both the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Economics programs.

With approval, students with an excellent academic record may also enrol in an additional Honours year in the Bachelor of Economics degree or in the Bachelor of Science degree.

For questions regarding the Bachelor of Economics requirements for the program, students should consult staff in the UNSW Business School Student Centre or the School of Economics. For questions relating to the Bachelor of Science component of the program, students should consult the Science Student Centre.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Please refer to the program objectives as listed in the description of the 3970 Bachelor of Science program and the 3543 Bachelor of Economics program.

Program Structure

A total of 192 units of credit is required to complete this dual degree program. Students must satisfy the following requirements for the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Economics components.

Where the requirements for the two programs are completed in less than 192 units of credit due to overlapping courses, students may satisfy the remaining units of credit from those offered by UNSW Science, UNSW Business School or other Faculties within UNSW.

The requirements of the Bachelor of Economics in dual mode (96UOC):

BEc Dual Mode  96 UOC
  • Compulsory Economics course (6 UOC)
  • Economics Major requirements (60 UOC)
  • Economics Electives (12 UOC)
  • UNSW Business School First-Year Elective (6 UOC)
  • UNSW Business School Electives (12 UOC)

Economics Requirements:
Students are required to complete at least 13 Economics courses including:
Business School Requirements:
Students are required to complete 3 Business School courses:
Please note: Bachelor of Science students should note that they are, in most, instances required to complete two Level 1 MATH courses and these meet the requirements for the BEc core quantitative courses ECON1202 and ECON1203.

Students should do the MATH courses which are required in the Bachelor of Science specialisations they choose. In a few of the BSc specialisations only one MATH course is required, in which case students should complete an appropriate second MATH course or its equivalent ECON course (ECON1202 or ECON1203).

Specifically:
  • Any one of the following courses is an acceptable substitute for ECON1202: MATH1031 or MATH1131 or MATH1141 or MATH1151.
  • Any one of the following courses is an acceptable substitute for ECON1203: MATH1041 or MATH2089 or MATH2099 or MATH2801 or MATH2841 or MATH2901 or ACTL2002 or ACTL2131.
  • ECON1203 may be substituted by PSYC2001 for those students who also do a major in Psychology.
If you complete the sequence MATH1131/MATH1231 or MATH1141/MATH1241 or MATH1151/MATH1251 you may use this as a substitute for the sequence ECON1202/ECON1203.

These substitutes for the compulsory core courses count towards the 16 Business School courses (96 UOC) required for the degree.

Note: ECON1202 and ECON1203 may not be good substitutes for the indicated MATH and ACTL courses depending on your program. You should check with your program authority regarding course substitutions.

Students have the option of counting the MATH courses towards the BSc and doing additional electives offered by the School of Economics OR counting the MATH courses towards the BEc and doing additional electives offered by UNSW Science

Academic Rules

BEc Progression Rules
Please refer to the Program Structure for the academic requirements relating to this program. Rules relating to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Economics shall apply wherever relevant. Students are advised to consult the Academic Rules for further information.

Academic rules relating to the Bachelor of Science in concurrent mode are as follows:

1. Students must complete a minimum of 96 units of credit;

2. Students must complete at least one approved Bachelor of Science major, and this must be declared before enrolling in Level II courses (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science page for approved majors). Information about how to declare a major can be found on the Science Student Centre website.

3. Students may choose to complete an optional minor using their Science electives (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science page for the list of approved minors).

Students cannot complete a minor with the same name as their nominated major, and Level II and III courses cannot be double-counted between majors and minors. More than one minor may be completed subject to the limit on double-counting. Students must declare their minor(s) before their final semester.

4. In addition to the courses required for a student's chosen major, students must take 'Science' courses so that the major plus 'Science' courses total 96 UoC. ‘Science’ courses are listed in Table 1 on the 3970 Bachelor of Science page.

5. Students must complete at least 24 UoC of Level I ‘Science’ courses. ‘Science’ courses are listed in Table 1 of the 3970 Bachelor of Science page.

6. Students may not enrol into Level II courses until at least 30 UoC of Level I courses have been successfully completed.

7. Students may not enrol into Level III courses until at least 72 UoC of courses have been successfully completed

Double Majors and Minors in Dual Degrees
Students who intend to complete a double major or a major combined with a minor in the Bachelor of Science when taken as part of a dual degree should be aware that it may be difficult to complete these combinations within 96 UoC. This may involve extra time and cost to complete, and may have visa implications for international students.
