Program Description
The program is intended for potential engineers who wish to become more aware of legal and social aspects of the engineering profession, and skilled in technical management, or potential legal practitioners who wish to add a strong technical dimension to their education and training.
Duration/Award
This is normally a six and a half year full-time concurrent degree program leading to the award of the two degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws (BE(Hons)/LLB).
Assumed Knowledge
A prescribed standard in mathematics for entry to the Faculty of Engineering and to individual courses in that faculty. Further details are available in the UAC Guide.
Transferring Engineering Disciplines (Plans)
Student must nominate an engineering discipline at enrolment. Subsequent transfers to another engineering discipline may be possible subject to the approval of both Faculties. Student may also choose the Engineering Flexible First Year plan. See handbook for Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) 3707 for full details.
Graduation
(i) A student who completes the requirements for both the BE(Hons) and LLB degrees shall receive at graduation a separate testamur for each of the degrees.
(ii) A student may apply to discontinue the combined BE(Hons) LLB program and elect to complete the BE(Hons) degree in accordance with all of the rules governing award of that degree. Following discontinuation of the combined BE(Hons) LLB program, courses which count toward that program will not in general count toward the single BE(Hons) degree unless they meet the single degree requirements in their own right.
(iii) A student will not be eligible to graduate from the LLB until requirements for both the BE(Hons) and the LLB have been satisfied.

Students must study engineering courses in a sequence approved by the Faculty of Engineering and law courses in a sequence approved by the Faculty of Law. Approved sequences are given below; other sequences may be approved under special circumstances.
(a) Engineering - from the consolidated course schedule in the Faculty of Engineering:
168 units of credit of Engineering courses from an Engineering discipline, at least 60 days of approved Industrial Training for the BE(Hons) degree.
(b) Law
96 UOC of Law compulsory courses
42 UOC of Law electives
6 UOC Law prescribed elective

Honours
Award of Class of Honours
- Class 1: WAM of at least 80 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
- Class 2 Division 1: WAM of at least 75 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
- Class 2 Division 2: WAM of at least 65 and Thesis Mark of at least 65

Academic Rules
To obtain the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and the Bachelor of Law a student must successfully complete courses that total at least 312 units of credit and include courses making up at least 168 units of credit described in the stream requirements for the BE (Hons) specialisation for which the student is enrolled. Students must also complete 60 days of Industrial Training.
Students may not count more than 60 units of credit of level 1 courses in this 168 units of credit.
Progression
To ensure that all students who complete the program attain the honours level learning outcomes of the program, the progression rules for the program are as follows:
• No level 3 BE (Hons) course until all Introductory core passed
• If any of the conditions below apply, students will be transferred to the Bachelor of Engineering Science program, with such transfer subject to appeal:
-2 fails in any given core course
-After half or more of the BE (Hons) stream attempted (more than 84UOC), 50% or more of BE (Hons) stream courses have been failed
- Prior to the final 48 UOC of the stream (120 UOC or more of the BE (Hons) stream completed), a WAM of less than 50%
Substitution
Students may substitute up to 12 UOC of Advanced Disciplinary courses (Level 5) in place of Disciplinary Knowledge courses from a school specified stream list of courses with the approval of the Program or Stream Authority.
