Program Description

The Bachelor of Art Theory Bachelor of Social Research and Policy (BArtTh BSRP) is a 4½ year dual award program which combines the focused study of the visual arts and visual culture with an education in the social sciences, and social research and policy.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The BArtTh component will provide graduates with:
  1. A rigorous understanding of art, design and media history and theory;
  2. A capacity to make informed critical judgements about various forms of contemporary and historical visual culture;
  3. An understanding of the global dimensions of visual and artistic forms
  4. An understanding of art, design and media in the context of their exhibition and display
  5. A capacity to undertake research in art history and visual culture
The aims of the UNSW Bachelor of Social Research and Policy are:
  1. To develop students’ creative thinking and their capacity to evaluate ideas and policy problems critically.
  2. To provide skills in undertaking social research, including collecting and analysing data concerning issues and problems particularly in an applied policy setting.
  3. To stimulate informed community and academic debate, and contribute to enlightened policy-making through excellence in professional practice.
  4. To develop students' capacity to contribute to, and work within, the local, national and international community in an ethical way.
  5. To provide familiarity with the theories, bodies of knowledge and methods of social research and explanations that constitute one or more fields of study in social science.
  6. To provide an understanding of the interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary nature of social science.

Program Structure

Art Theory Core (30 UOC)
Art Theory Major (66 UOC)

Students must complete:
  • 66 UOC from approved courses in Art Theory
Bachelor of Social Research and Policy component

120 UOC made up of:
  • Core social research and policy courses (54 UOC)
  • Prescribed social research and policy electives (12 UOC)
  • One stream (54 UOC) from the approved list

Social Science prescribed electives: 12 units of credit (2 courses). Students should choose two course from the following list:

Award with Distinction

High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 across their program and who have completed at least 48 UOC of their program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".

Honours

Honours in BArtTh Component

Students undertaking the BArtTh in Dual Award mode may apply to complete an additional year (48 UOC) of study for the award of Honours. For details of Honours please see 4803 Bachelor of Art Theory.

Honours in BSRP Component

After completion of 144 uoc including all of the requirements of the Bachelor of Social Research and Policy dual degree, high achieving students may apply for admission to the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Honours) program 4504 or the Bachelor of Social Research and Policy (Honours) 4507 if undertaking the Social Research and Policy honours stream. A minimum WAM of 70 in the Bachelor of Social Research and Policy component of the dual degree is required for entry into Honours.
