Program Description
Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
The BFA component aims to:
- Provide an opportunity for students to undertake rigorous and demanding studies at tertiary level from a wide range of approaches and disciplines within the visual arts.
- Provide the opportunity for students to explore the visual arts through a critical examination of the possibilities they offer and by use of available technological resources.
- Encourage students to develop increased self-motivation as developing independent and professional practitioners.
- Provide students with:
- an understanding of concepts relevant to aesthetics and the visual arts;
- understanding of various media through practice and experimentation with such media;
- an understanding of research practice in fine arts, and a capacity to engage with research;
- a confidence and competence in decision making, together with an appreciative and informed awareness of viewpoints in the visual arts other than their own; and
- an understanding of the historical and theoretical underpinning of contemporary fine art practice.
6. Increase students' awareness of, and sensitivity to, their environment.
The Program Objectives of the UNSW BA are:
- To develop informed understanding of human experience, human culture and human society
- To teach the tools and methods of understanding associated with Humanities and Social Science disciplines, and to encourage students to perceive the relationships between these disciplines
- To encourage the breadth of vision and critical thinking associated with interdisciplinary scholarship and research
- To enable students to place contemporary Australian society and culture in an historical and comparative context
- To engage critically with fundamental questions about value in both ethical and aesthetic contexts
- To develop the skills of critical, creative and imaginative thinking about society, culture and the arts
- To promote the techniques and value of reasoned and openminded discussion and debate
- To foster understanding of the experiences and world-views of other times, other places, and other cultures.
- The skills involved in scholarly enquiry
- The ability to engage in independent and reflective learning
- Information Literacy - the skills to locate, evaluate and use relevant information
- The capacity for enterprise, initiative and creativity
- A capacity to contribute to, and work within, the international community
- The skills required for collaborative and multidisciplinary work

- The skills of effective communication
- An in-depth engagement with the relevant disciplinary knowledge in its interdisciplinary context.

All majors are available to be completed in minor stream ("Non-designated Minor"). There are, however, some areas of study that are only available as Minors. These are known as "Designated Minors". Honours in Bachelor of Arts component
High achieving Bachelor of Arts students (in Single or Dual mode) who have successfully completed all program requirements may apply for admission to honours in the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Honours) program 4504. A minimum WAM of 70 is required for entry into Honours.
