Program Description

Please note: From 2014 the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Medical Studies (BMed)/Doctor of Medicine (MD) will replace the current Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (BA, MBBS).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Arts/Medicine program is an alternative program of study in which, over a 7 or 8 year period, a student may complete the degree of Bachelor of Arts, together with the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. This program is only open to students who have been accepted for entry into the Faculty of Medicine.

In order to complete the combined program in 7 years, students are required to undertake an approved arts-focused Independent Learning Project as well as to complete an additional Arts course above the normal Semester load (24 UOC) in at least one Semester. All other students will require 8 years to complete the combined program.

Students completing study in this program in Dual form with the Bachelor of Arts will be required to design their Independent Learning Project (ILP) as a joint project with the Bachelor of Arts. Twenty four UOC of the 28 UOC that makes up the ILP will be double counted towards the Arts and Social Sciences Minor in the Bachelor of Arts. The remaining 12 UOC will be made up of two courses in FASS that relate to the ILP project, approved by the Convenor of the Bachelor of Arts. This 12 UOC may be course shared from the major stream in the BA the student is already completing. If such is the case the student will make up their depth requirement for the BA with Prescribed Faculty Electives. Students who do not wish to pursue this option but complete another FASS minor stream will be able to do so. This will result in an extra semester of study to meet the requirements of the program.

Students who wish to undertake the program should contact the Faculty of Medicine Education and Student Office during Year 1 in order to apply to transfer from the Medicine 3802 program to Arts/Medicine 3845 at the end of year 1.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Arts/Medicine program is intended for those students who wish to continue their interest and studies in the Arts and Social Sciences during their medical studies.
