Program Description

The Bachelor of Music (UNSW BMus) is a four year, full time degree that offers intensive pre-professional training in four Streams: Music Creative Practice, Music Inquiry, Sonic Arts, and Music Pedagogy. The first two years are common to all Streams with the exception that the Music Creative Practice Stream continues with individual performance or compositional tuition in a self-selected musical style or tradition, including Jazz or World Music, in year two. Specialisation in the three other Streams begins in year three. Music Inquiry provides a highly academic focus on studies in Historical Musicology, Ethnomusicology, Music Analysis or the Psychology of Music. Sonic Arts develops technical and creative skills in Electro-Acoustic music and Sound Design and provides links with Media Studies at UNSW. Music Pedagogy provides a course of study in studio teaching with an emphasis on practical application and preparation for further study in Music Education. These three Streams also include extensive training in musicianship and ensemble performance. All BMus Streams are supported by a variety of large and small, Western and Non-Western Music ensembles as well as extensive opportunities for developing musicianship skills.

The BMus can be completed full-time in single mode (normally 4 years, including an Honours option) and in Dual mode (the equivalent of three years full-time) or part-time. Level four of the program may be taken at Pass or Honours level.

The BMus has a depth component and a breadth component. Students enrolled in single mode do both the depth and breadth component while students enrolled in Dual mode only complete the depth component. Dual mode enables students to complete a degree in music and another degree over five years.

The Depth (Blue Zone) component is:

  1. The completion of Core Musicology courses (30 UOC, 6 courses)
  2. The completion of Core Musicianship courses (24 UOC, 4 courses)
  3. The completion of Core Performance Laboratory courses (48 - 54 UOC, 8 to 9 courses, depending on the Stream; or 36 UOC, 6 courses, if the Honours alternative at Level 4 is taken)
  4. The completion of a Stream Gateway Course (6 UOC, 1 course)
  5. The completion of Prescribed Music Electives (18 – 24 UOC, 3 to 4 courses depending on the Stream)
  6. The completion of Directed Study (6 UOC, 1 course)
  7. The completion of the Music Capstone (6 UOC, 1 course) (only for students at Pass level)
The Breadth (Green Zone) component is:
  1. Free electives (36 UOC - 6 courses)
  2. General Education (12 UOC- 2 courses)

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The BMus enables students to develop skills and knowledge in music as preparation for professional work in areas as diverse as music performance, arranging and composition, studio teaching, research, broadcasting and recording, arts administration, music and arts journalism, and music technology and sound design.

Students are responsible for ensuring they are enrolling in accordance with the Academic Rules outlined above. Students should not assume that because they have enrolled in a course online that the course is automatically credited to their degree program.
