Stream Outline
In a major in Development Studies, you will develop a comprehensive knowledge of the world of ‘development’, including foreign aid, humanitarian assistance, state welfare and local initiatives. You will learn the causes and consequences of uneven development, and be part of the debate as to what type of development, if any, is required to improve people’s lives. Upon graduation, you will have a deep critical understanding of development issues at a level of competency sufficient for a career in development, either as a development practitioner, policy maker, researcher or educator.
Upon successful completion of a Development Studies stream, you will be able to:
- Articulate a grounded understanding of development concepts, theory and issues sufficient for working in development research or practise;
- Demonstrate knowledge of a range of theoretical and practical skills for critical analysis of development-related problems;
- Show a critical understanding of the key debates in development studies and ability to articulate your own perspectives;
- Show an understanding of key development actors, the different roles they play, obstacles to effective co-operation and how to best overcome them; and
- Offer an international outlook that recognises the interconnected nature of current events and politics in different parts of the world.
