Stream Outline

Honours in human resource management is intended to enhance a students’ critical analytical and problem-solving skills, deepen their knowledge of the field and provide valuable research skills. This is achieved by completing honours level courses and a research thesis.

This stream is available in full-time mode only and commences in Session 1 of each year

Stream Structure

Students must complete 48UOC consisting of:

PLUS a Research thesis which is completed across Semeters 1 and 2:

Thesis requirements:
  • written in a traditional thesis‐style or “journal‐article” style.
  • 60‐100 pages (including appendices, but excluding reference list), i.e. up to a maximum of 100 pages, or approximately 20,000 words.
  • In addition to the written thesis, students will be provide an oral presentation in which they outline and defend their thesis proposal or their finished research to a group of their peers and relevant School academics.
The thesis will be marked by two independent examiners appointed by the Honours Co-ordinator in the School of Management in consultation with the Head of School / School Honours Committee. The final thesis mark will usually be the average of the examiners’ recommendations.

Honours mark and Class of Honours

The Honours degree is awarded in the classes shown below. A composite Honours mark (based on the Honours year WAM, i.e. will include all components of the program) will be calculated for each student at the end of the Honours year and used to determine the class of Honours degree awarded:

First Class Honours 85 and above
Second Class Division I 75 – 84
Second Class Division II 65 – 74
Third Class 50 – 64

Entry Requirements

A student must have completed a pass degree (e.g., Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Psychological Science, Bachelor of Economics) with a major in human resource management, including MGMT3708 Research Methods in Employment and Management.

A student in a dual degree may gain entry to this Honours stream prior to completing the requirements for the dual degree program if they have completed 144 UOC including all requirements for the human resource management major (including MGMT3708). Students with comparable qualifications from Australian and overseas institutions are also welcome to apply.

To be considered for entry, a student must have an overall Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 70 (or equivalent) with WAM of at least 71 in their human resource management major.

Students must complete all courses in the pass degree at the first attempt. If not, entry to the B Com (Hons) program will be only with the approval of Head of School.

A student will only be admitted if appropriate supervision is available. If there are more applicants than the School of Management can accommodate, admission will be determined by academic merit.

How to Apply

Applicants intending to apply to the Honours programs are encouraged to discuss their eligibility and study program with the Honours Coordinator for Management.

After these discussions, internal applicants should send the following information to the Honours Coordinator for Management:
  • A cover letter highlighting the academic background and other strengths of the applicant
  • A copy of the applicant’s CV (with at least one academic referee)
  • An academic transcript from the relevant tertiary institution
  • A completed application form
  • A statement of research interest/proposal not exceeding 1,000 words
  • Other relevant supporting documents (e.g. awards, research papers), if any.

Pathways

Students who successfully complete the honours program may continue to further study in Master of Philosophy or PhD.

Students will be notified once final marks for Semester 2 become available. Students are expected to begin their preliminary research over the summer vacation.
