This plan is available to students commencing at Introductory level.

Aims of the program

To develop informed understanding of human experience, human culture and human society in relation to German Studies.
To teach the tools and methods of understanding associated with German Studies, and to encourage students to perceive the relationship between German Studies and other Humanities and Social Science disciplines.
To encourage the breadth of vision and critical thinking associated with interdisciplinary scholarship and research related to German Studies.
To enable students to place contemporary German language, society and culture in a historical and comparative context.
To engage critically with fundamental questions about value in German Studies in both ethical and aesthetical contexts.
To develop the skills of critical, creative and imaginative thinking about German language, society, culture and the arts.
To promote the techniques and value of reasoned and open-minded discussion and debate.
To foster understanding of the experiences and world-views of other times, other places, and other cultures from a German perspective.

Plan Structure

For a major sequence in German Studies students must complete 48 units of credit in German courses.

Level 1

ARTS1510 Introductory German A (6 UOC)
ARTS1511 Introductory German B (6 UOC)

Level 2

ARTS2510 Intermediate German A (6 UOC)
ARTS2511 Intermediate German B (6 UOC)

Level 3

ARTS3510 Advanced German A (6 UOC)
ARTS3511 Advanced German B (6 UOC)

Contextual Courses
12 UOC taken from the appropriate European Studies offerings, for example:

ARTS3780 Germany since 1945 (6 UOC)
ARTS6710 Europe between the Wars (6 UOC)
ARTS6711 Confronting the Past (6 UOC)
