Plan Outline

This Program is available only to students admitted through the scholarship selection procedures administered by the UNSW Co-op Program office. The BCom (ISM) is a four year degree program for which honours may be awarded. It is an industry linked education program leading to the award of the qualification Bachelor of Commerce in Information Systems and Management.

The program draws on Information Systems (IS), accounting, finance, economics and business in general and is intended to develop conceptual and practical skills. Throughout the four year program, students will be exposed to business information systems across various complex decision making contexts and will learn how these systems, and the information generated by them, support the modern organisation in achieving both day-to-day as well as long-term objectives.

The BCom (ISM) program has been designed in conjunction with Information Systems and Management industry professionals to provide for the needs of Australian businesses. The program combines the requirements for the award of the degree with 18 months of coordinated industrial training at three different sponsoring organisations (24 weeks at each). Industrial Training extends outside university semesters. A scholarship is payable from funds donated by the sponsoring organisations. Entry to the program is limited to students awarded a scholarship through the BCom (ISM) selection procedures administered by the UNSW Co-op Program Office. For baseline requirements to the UNSW Co-op program visit the frequently asked questions page.

Consideration for entry to the course may proceed only on the basis of an application submitted directly to the UNSW Co-op program Office and application through UAC. Visit the UNSW Co-op website for a brochure and application form.

Students who are academically acceptable for the BCom (ISM) Degree Program, but who are not offered a scholarship position, should consider registering for first Stage entry into the BCom 3502 program. If ISM Scholarships become available at the end of stage 1, students undertaking the BCom 3502 program - majoring in IS - may be offered an interview and a transfer into the BCom (ISM) 3502 UNSW Co-op Scholarship Degree Program.

Program Objectives and Outcomes
This four year program teaches Information Systems Management Theory and Practice and provides industrial training linked to that teaching. The three industrial training periods in the course are each of approximately six months duration, running from January to June of years 2 and 4 and July to December of year 3 of the program.

After an introductory first stage, students will learn about the business and management aspects of the IS discipline including, business systems analysis and design, data management, security, project management, business intelligence and decision making. Students will learn about business information systems across various complex decision making contexts and how these systems, and the information generated by them, support the modern organisation to achieve both day-to-day as well as long-term objectives.
