Objectives: This course will build upon the experiences in OPTM2111. Aspects of primary optometric care relating specifically to the assessment of the integrity of the eye and visual pathways will be presented both theoretically and in practical terms in an integrated fashion and with particular reference to normal anatomy and physiology of the eye. An understanding of the optics pertaining to the instruments in use will be integrated into this clinical course. This course will be delivered by lectures, tutorials, practical classes and self-directed learning. In addition, further development of technical skills in refraction and case analysis relating to refractive management will be expected.

Brief curriculum: communication skills, eliciting presenting concerns, history and symptoms; assessment of the integrity of the cranial nerves, the anterior eye and ocular adnexa, ocular media, the normal fundus, colour vision, visual fields, and intraocular pressure; introduction to diagnostic drugs; acquisition of technical skills with direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy, fundus lenses, gonioscopy, tonometry, visual field testing and colour vision testing; optics relating to instrumentation used to assess ocular health; refractive errors, particularly relating to case analysis for the uncomplicated patient.
