Description

Static and dynamic finite element analysis of ship structures using commercial finite element systems including discussion of resources required, element types, sources of error and convergence. Application of finite element analysis to nonlinear problems and prediction of failure in ship structures.
Composite materials - fibre-reinforced composites. Classification and definitions. Fibres and matrices, fibre-matrix interface. Fabrication technology, cost effectiveness. Geometrical aspects; volume fraction, weight fraction, voids. Elastic properties of unidirectional lamina, in-plane random short and long fibre laminas. Laminate theory. Strengths of unidirectional lamina and laminates. Failure theories for fibre-reinforced materials. Fatigue and fracture of composites - notch sensitivity and fracture energy.
