Science and Application - INDC3002 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description The chemical processes underpinning major environmental problems are studied, in their economic and social context. The role of the chemical industry in causing and resolving problems is examined. The emphasis of the course is on the chemistry of current environmental issues. These issues provide a logical basis for presenting the underlying science. Examination of major industrial processes provides examples of environmental applications. Topics covered include soil chemistry, acid rain, urban smogs, global warming, stratospheric ozone loss, combustion processes, toxic elements and organic compounds, radioactive contamination and occupational health and safety. Major chemical industries for iron and steel, aluminium, sulfuric acid, ammonia, nitric acid, chlor-alkali and cement are examined. The course aims to improve scientific literacy and critical thinking.
This course replaces INDC3110.
