Description
A study of 18th-century European music (late baroque and classical) in its historical, social and cultural contexts. Includes a tutorial in musicological research techniques and discussion of historical performing conventions.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should:
- Become familiar with a large body of 18th-century compositions and their historical and social context
- Be able to comment on the significance and stylistic features of the pieces
- Acquire a deeper understanding of various historical perspectives and aesthetic notions and how these impact on compositional genres, styles, preoccupations and preferences
- Gain an understanding of historical performance practices and the role they play in conveying the sound world of the composer to modern listeners
- Deepen their analytical approaches, critical thinking, research and academic writing and communications skills.
