Description

Examines the historical development of music in creating meaning in a variety of genres of film. Topics include the role of music in silent films; scores composed for different genres of film associated with Hollywood; music in non-Hollywood films (Asia, India, Australia, Europe); the portrayal of music and musicians on film; and some recent operas and other works related to musical theatre.


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of music in film within an historical context
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the relationship between music and the creation of meaning in various genres of film
  • Identify, classify, discuss and evaluate various functions of music in a variety of film genres and styles.

Assessment

  • Essay (2500 words) - 40%
  • Reflective journal - 30%
  • Contribution to class activities - 20%
  • Open-book exam - 10%
