Description

Covers basic issues in music education, theory and practice and develops a range of skills, knowledge and understandings associated with classroom teaching at the K-6 level. Also introduces basic teaching skills with opportunities to observe, critically evaluate and practise a variety of music lessons in varying formats. Deals with issues related to the responsibility of a music teacher in relation to the expectations of pupils, parents and employers.

Note: Includes three weeks of practice teaching in primary schools.


Learning Outcomes

The course prepares first year students for their first school practicum at the end of the first semester. At the end of the course students will be able to:
  • Organise and write lesson plans, teach, and control primary grade classes (K-6)
  • Teach class singing, reading graphic and staff notations
  • Teach composition and listening to selected music repertoire
  • Plan work suitable for the developmental stages of primary grade children
  • Understand some of the complexities of class management, school organization, and working within a team of teachers in the primary school.

Assessment

  • Assignment 1 (Short essay) - 15%
  • Asssignment 2 (Lesson plans)- 20%
  • Assignment 3 (4 Lessons) - 25%
  • Final assignment (Teaching portfolio) - 40%
