Description

Introduces students to ways of investigating and interpreting the theatrical and performance past. Analyses performance evidence and representations as well as history texts and historiographical theories. Topics include: documentary evidence and iconography, periodisation, historiography and historicisation, biography and autobiography, social history and the performing body, and performance history and methodology from fields such as gender and postcolonial studies.


Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of key historiographical concepts and debates
  • Accurately describe and appropriately use historical evidence relevant to the examples of theatre and performance phenomena used in the course
  • Discuss the relationship between evidence from a performance phenomenon (scripts, lists, designs, objects etc.) and its social context
  • Describe and employ one or more methodologies used by performance historians
  • Consider the partisan and historically specific nature of representations (history books, biographies, interviews, photos, documentaries, etc.) of the theatrical and performance past
  • Engage more confidently in self-directing learning activities, such as group Exhibit projects and self-devised essay titles.

  • Group exhibit project (Grade informed by self-evaluation and peer review) - 40%
  • Research blog - 10%
  • Essay (2500 words) - 40%
  • Participation - 10%
