Description

Issues related to the teacher as a professional, and concomitant ethical ramifications including: responsibilities to students, superordinates, subordinates, employers, parents and society; the role of the teacher in schooling; and, critical examination of Government and education system policies, including those related to accountability, professional standards and development, and social justice.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Reflect critically on the concepts of the major moral theories, and examine their usefulness in resolving practical moral issues
  • Understand the features and components of general professional ethics, and its impact on professional procedure and pedagogy
  • Understand the major themes and issues relating to educational practice as a profession
  • Examine critically Government and education system policies, and how they are aimed at addressing the variety of the student population and their needs
  • Examine critically the practice of teaching, through using the skills of evaluation, analysis and argumentation.

Assessment

  • Short paper (500-1,500 words) - 10%
  • Essay (1750-3000 words) - 30%
  • Tutorial assessment - 10%
  • Exam - 50%
