Description

Examines the justification for, and ways of teaching, the historical and philosophical components of the NSW Years 7-12 Science curriculum; includes the study of the history and nature of science and its relations with other aspects of human culture such as philosophy, religion, art and poetry.

Learning Outcomes

On the completion of this course, students will learn how to identify philosophical and historical issues in science education, and how to discuss and research such issues.

Assessment

  • Essay (2500 words) - 50%
  • Preparation of a unit of work utilising history and/or philosophy of science (the unit can be for primary or secondary classes but not science classes). Those without teaching experience or contacts will do a second essay (1500 words) - 25%
  • Augmented weekly notes - 25%
