Description
Investigates schools as an important part of society in terms of how they interact with and respond to cultural, political, economic and other factors in society. Introduces students to relationships between education and Australian society by focusing on the nature and purpose of education in Australian society, winners and losers in education and the current directions in education. Students investigate the above through a small collaborative research project.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe, explain and discuss the history, context and aims of Australian schools
- Identify and explain the relationships between family background factors such as SES, Aboriginality, cultural difference and gender and educational outcomes of school students
- Recognise and discuss the relationships between family factors such as family structure and functioning and the educational outcomes of school students
- Distinguish the intersection of family factors and summarise the implications for educational outcomes of students and schools
- Identify, explain and examine the relationships between educational outcomes of school students with differences between schools such as geographical location, government VS non-government and small VS large schools
- Describe, discuss and analyse the relationships between educational outcomes of school students and differences within schools such as grouping practices and quality teachers
- Recognise, examine and summarise the relationships between educational outcomes of school students and peer group differences
- Identify, investigate and assess the relationships between market based government policy, schools and educational outcomes of students
- Recognise, examine and summarise the relationships between educational outcomes of school students and peer group differences
- Examine, discuss and evaluate NSW DET policy such as PSP, Gender equity and Aboriginal education.
