Description

A detailed study of the nature and role of composition in dance and the relationship between composition and the process and product of choreography.

Note: Composition workshops are of a highly practical nature. Students must be prepared to spend time outside of class working with peers on composition tasks.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Develop, demonstrate and defend a personal movement vocabulary to assist in the communication of intent in your choreography
  • Select, develop and integrate choreographic devices and forms that assist in the communication of intent in your choreography
  • Analyse, evaluate and refine your own choreographic endeavours
  • Identify and defend your use of choreographic devices and forms to assist in the communication of intent in your choreography
  • Appraise and evaluate Western contemporary dance and choreography
  • Analyse, interpret and evaluate dance works employing the frameworks and theories of Janet Adshead and Susan Foster (amongst others)
  • Develop, employ and defend your own framework for dance analysis
  • Recognise symbiotic links between dance analysis and choreographic process.
