Description

Introduces key concepts and current debates in criminology. Covers fundamental issues such as the definition, measurement and explanation of crime, the role of research, and the influence of criminology on public policy.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Outline the scope and aims of criminology as a discipline
  • Identify key themes and debates about crime and crime control
  • Describe a variety of ways to define, measure and explain crime
  • Understand the role of criminological research in influencing public policy
  • Use basic terminology common to the criminological field
  • Critically analyse social issues and apply criminological perspectives.

  • Weekly exercises - 60%
  • Essay - 40%
