Description

A study of Classical and Romantic music in their historical, social and cultural contexts. Includes a seminar in musicological research techniques.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have gained:

A familiarity with the most representative and famous operas, piano and orchestral works composed during the Classical and Romantic periods
An ability to comment on their significance and stylistic features
An understanding of historical performance practices and their significance for conveying the composer's sound world to modern listeners
A knowledge about music and society in 18th- and 19th-century Europe, and the role 19th-century aesthetics and world-view played in shaping modern musicological discourse
Deepened skills in analytical approaches, critical thinking, research and academic writing and communications skills.
