Description

Introduces case studies in regional, local, and national cinemas. Critical analysis of key texts and a wide range of relevant films. Topics may include French cinema: issues of aesthetics and representation; Japanese cinema; cinemas of Asia and the Pacific Rim.


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
  • Identify key features of, for example, East Asian popular films
  • Reflect on these in relation to film industries in conjunction with mainstream entertainment in the West (comparison)
  • Show evidence of original thinking in framing questions of popularity in any medium (method of approach).

Assessment

  • Essay 1 (2500 words) - 30%
  • Essay 2 (2500 words) - 30%
  • Presentation and participation - 20%
  • Screening log - 20%
