Description

Traces the growth and operation of Hollywood as an industry as well as a global cultural phenomenon; examines the technological, political and economic determinants that have shaped the history of the American film industry; and relates Hollywood's characteristic modes of narration and representation to their industrial, technological, and political conditions of existence.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete this course successfully will be able to:

Recall key events, institutions and people in the history of Hollywood from the earliest days of the American film industry to the present
Describe in historical detail such issues as Hollywood's production processes, the economics of global film markets, Hollywood's political influence, Hollywood's adaptation to new technologies, etc.
Analyse in critical detail examples of Hollywood's film style across different periods and genres.

Tutorial participation, including sequence analysis - 30%
Two in-class tests - 30%
Essay including essay outline (2500 words) - 40%
