Description

Explores the balance between globalisation and localisation in different media systems. Identifies key global players. Surveys current and emerging trends, technologies and regulatory regimes. Studies local uses and adaptations of global media and their implications for the nation state.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • Evaluate the role media plays in fostering global, national and local identities
  • Appreciate diversity among and within cultures, while recognising the role global media plays in fostering new patterns of identification, which are no longer solely based on geographic notions of space
  • Identify key trends and patterns in the flow of audio-visual goods and services and evaluate the impact of attempts to regulate them
  • Classify the diverse uses and adaptations of global media in specific local contexts.

  • Academic essay (1500 words) - 30%
  • Research essay (2500 words) - 40%
  • Group presentation - 20%
  • Tutorial participation - 10%
