Description

Introduces the basic principles of and analytic vocabulary for the study of theatrical performance.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Describe a performance and its component elements
  • Explain in terms of those elements how the performance achieves its effect
  • Understand key terms in theatre and performance analysis
  • Discuss selected key practitioners and theorists in 20th century theatre
  • Read academic texts with critical understanding
  • Show competence in basic principles of group-devised performance
  • Access information and resources relevant to theatre and performance
  • Follow the conventions of academic writing - titles, references and citations, etc.
  • Work in an effective, self-motivated way in a university environment.

Assessment

  • Participation and tutorial presentation - 15%
  • Performance analysis - 15%
  • Essay (2000 words) - 40%
  • Group project - 30%
