Description

Explores current issues in descriptive grammar, including the distinction between structure and function, the nature of constituency, the language particular - language general distinction, the relationship between grammar and information packaging, the definition of word classes, and the description of subordination and coordination.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

Identify the differences between traditional and structural approaches to English grammar
Recognise word, phrase and clause categories (such as adjective, prepositional phrase, and relative clause) and grammatical functions (such as subject, object, and modifier)
Explain and analyse such grammatical phenomena as subordination, coordination, negation, and mood.
