Description

Examines socio- and geo-political forces outside the educational institution that shape which languages we learn, and how we learn them. Explores the concepts of global languages, linguistic imperialism, language death, language planning, and language birth, and examines the acquistion of the first language, bilingualism, and general factors affecting the choice and learning or acquisition of second and subsequent languages.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should develop an understanding of:
  • The place of language, especially English, in the world from a number of different perspectives
  • The forces that influence the choice of languages to be learnt within the educational system
  • How language is learned, both as a first language and as a second or subsequent language
  • How individual variables affect language learning.

Assessment

  • Participation and tutorial presentation - 20%
  • Assignment 1 - 25%
  • Class test - 30%
  • Assignment 2 - 25%
