Description

Examines Japanese culture and society from early times to present. Key themes include social and cultural change; evolution of political systems; religion and philosophical thought; identity; and economic change.

Learning Outcomes

Understand key elements of Japanese civilisation and culture
Understand key changes in Japanese social structures
Ability to analyse critically the relationship between civilisation and the individual

Assessment

Tutorial activities - 10%
Three short exams - 60%
Collaborative research project - 30%
